CITY OF VIENNA TO HELP FUND PROGRESSIVE
CONGREGATION
Congregation Or Chadasch is to receive
financial aid from the Vienna Municipality in order to help cover
expenditures in such areas as education and physical facilities. The
city has also indicated a willingness to help cover the costs of a
rabbi. Or Chadasch was founded in 1990 and presently has close to 100
families on its membership rolls. Approximately 12,000 Jews today reside
in Austria, 10,000 of them in Vienna. The Israelitische Kultusgemeinde
(IKG), the official umbrella organization for Austrian Jewry, recognized
Or Chadasch a year ago following prolonged negotiations, opening the
door to support from the City of Vienna.
SLOVAKIAN YOUTH EAGER TO ATTEND SUMMER
ENCAMPMENT
Rabbi Andrew Goldstein of London has
identified a group of Slovakian Jewish students who are keen to attend a
summer camp at the end of July. Aaron Goldstein, Andrew's son and a
rabbinical student at Leo Baeck College, helped lead a successful winter
encampment near Olomouc in the Czech Republic on December 27 - January 3
for young members of that Jewish community. It is hoped that the summer
gathering will include students from the various Czech communities,
Hungary, Germany and elsewhere.
